Family Christmas Gift Ideas

that will keep giving all year.

If you’re a family that receives a ton of toys for Christmas from grandparents and friends, it can feel like your kids have every toy, that you’re drowning in a sea of un-played with toys and they do not need more. Every year, I ask for one educational toys or games such as blocks and then a membership to places around the city for us to visit.

Science City at Union Station

A membership to Union Station is pretty sweet. They have a free train room for anyone without a membership but members get unlimited access to Science City throughout the year as well as discounts to the theater, planetarium and stores. Not only that, but they have set up discounts at other locations throughout Kansas City and nationwide museums as well.

The Kansas City Zoo

The premier memberships at the zoo are pretty nice. The access it gives you to the train, trams, carousel, sky safari and boat really make this membership! Those and the entry fee ay for itself after going once or twice. Then the membership gets you discounted rates at Sea Life and other zoos and aquariums nationwide. Definitely worth keeping this one on the list.

Wonderscope

Wonderscope is such a cool place. They have spaces set up for active learning through play and exploration. They have a water room, block room, cafe and shopping store. Climbing places and a beautiful garden where kids can learn about the different plants and composting. No chance for boredom here.

Sea Life Aquarium

So Sea Life and Legoland are actually in the same building. I was so confused the first time we went! You can get a ass just for Sea Life or get a combo pass for both Sea Life and Legoland.

Legoland

If your kid likes to build things, then this is the place to be! They have large floor blocks, Duplo’s and traditional Legos. You can build race cars and send them down tracks, build in a house space for a tea party, test your build on an earthquake table, ride rides and even watch movies. When you first enter, there is an amazing miniature of Kansas City and other places around the world you can talk to your kid about.

Deanna Rose Farmstead

Do your kids like fishing, feeding goats, walking through gorgeous gardens and riding on miniature farm equipment? I know my kids do! The mining is always a favorite for my kids as well. There is so much to do here that you’ll have to spend the whole weekend. Although the prices are already fairly low, the Friends of the Farmstead gives you discounts and means you don’t need cash for the whole family.

Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary

Martha Lafiete is actually free to visit and walk the trails. You can see some of the animals inside the building. They offer classes for the kids on the weekends as well. If you preschool or homeschool, they offer a field trip program that is very reasonably priced. You and your kids can learn about habitats of animals and see the animals in those habitats as you walk the trails. They even have a summer camp. If you want to purchase a membership, they help sustain the nature sanctuary so they can continue providing these amazing programs.

We Rock the Spectrum Kids Gym

If your kids are active and need to get some wiggles out, check out Spectrum KC. With COVID, they are not offering open play but you can check out their classes options.

Sky Zone Trampoline Park

We love bouncing at Sky Zone or Urban Air. If you don’t have a trampoline at home, these places are great locations to try. Sky Zone offers birthday parties or just jumping time. They even have a special time just for toddlers and infants so you don’t have to worry as much about your smaller kids being bounced around by larger ones.

Urban Air Adventure Park

This is another great indoor play space. They offer the indoor trampolines but add laser tag, rock wall climbing, bowling, mini golf, bumper cars and more! If it’s in the budget, this is a great place to go for a day of family fun.

MY Play Cafe

What a great way to meet other parents with kiddos of a similar age! MY Play Cafe is for children under 6. They have classes available during the open play sessions they offer which is awesome. Kiddos can have a playdate in a safe environment while mama, or daddy, can get a coffee and have a mom’s date. They also offer memberships if it’s a location you think you could utilize frequently.

SuperKids Club

Remember when we were kids and we jumped in the ball pits and crawled through tunnels? This is our childhood brought back to life! You can host a birthday party or just go to an open session. Either way, it’s bound to be a fun 2 hours.

Monkey Bizness

This is another indoor playground sure to be a hit. Obstacle courses, rock climbing and inflatable jump sets make a great afternoon fun or birthday party setting. Another great option for a gift card.

Some other great ideas for Christmas gifts for families:

It’s amazing how many options there are for gifts that are family oriented or at least not toy oriented. I know my kids don’t tend to play with a lot of toys these days. They like to build things or do art. The best gift I feel we can give is the gift of spending time with them. Spending time doing something fun, learning and making memories will last a lot longer than a single toy that may break.
